Cars Vs. God

Daily Gospel Thoughts

2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” Colossians 3:2

The car that I drive to work daily has transmission problems and a variety of other issues so I’m going to have to replace it pretty soon as its only worth around $1000 and it doesn’t make sense to pay thousands to put a transmission in it.  Last week I was watching a car that was coming up for bid on a local auto auction.  I really wanted that car, and I really wanted a good deal on it.

I followed the bidding on the car throughout the weekend with a lot of interest.  I refreshed the browser like 20 times, and checked the mobile app 20 times as well.  It looked like I was going to get a really good deal on it as there wasn’t too much interest.

The day of the auction came up and the car I desired came up to be sold.  Loads of bidders jumped in and skyrocketed the price of the car.  It was too rich for my blood so I got out.  I didn’t get the car, and all of that time spent refreshing my browser over the weekend was wasted.

Boy I really had my mind set on getting that car.  I let it consume my mind throughout the weekend.  Then I came across Colossians 3:2 and it slapped me right in the face.  Possessions like cars don’t last forever.  They are just earthly things.

As Christians we are called to set our minds on things from above.  These things are spiritual things, things of God.  There are plenty more cars that will come up on the auction, and maybe I will get a good deal (Lord Knows) but one thing is for certain, wasting a weekend thinking about a car did me no good, when I could have been thinking about the Lord instead!

I wonder if any earthly thing has been consuming your thoughts lately?  If you are like me, spend some time thinking about Col 3:2 and pray asking God to help you set your mind on heavenly things instead!
